Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard recycling is a great program for those businesses who generate quite a bit of cardboard on a regular basis. This service can be done via, small / large dumpsters or compactors. If you are not sure which service would be best for you, give us a call and we will have an account representative come out and evaluate your service. We currently have a cardboard recycling program in Davis and Weber County for businesses, along with scrap metal recycling all over the Wasatch Front for businesses and contractors. These services are available in front load containers and roll off containers.
 Benefits of Recycling Cardboard
  • Cardboard recycling can produce huge savings to our commercial garbage collection customers. Most of our customers don’t realize that cardboard can take up a lot of space in dumpsters. Their garbage cans fill up faster and our customers pay more for disposal fees on a product that can be recycled.
  • Recycling cardboard also reduces the demand for new paper which saves trees and decreases pollution generated in new paper production.
  • Recycling cardboard also reduces bulky waste and space in our landfills as well.
When Not to Recycle Cardboard
  • In most cases recycling cardboard is a fairly easy process. However, there are a few reasons that cardboard cannot be recycled. Cardboard from pizza boxes and other food containers can be contaminated with grease. When the grease from these products is mixed with water during the slurry process the water and oil can’t mix and the slurry process is ruined.
  • Cardboard containers coated in wax such as juice containers or milk cartons usually can’t be recycled as well.

Ace Disposal supports Parents Empowered.org

Ace Disposal has teamed up with parents empowered to support the important cause of underage drinking. Ace has put billboards on the sides of the trucks to help remind parents about talking to their children about the effects of underage drinking. The power of parents is what is going to help this problem get under control.

Parents Empowered focuses on eliminating underage drinking in Utah. Kids are drinking as young as eight years old. There are the common reasons why underage drinking is bad such as: drinking and driving, and not being mature enough to realize what they are doing or who's life they are affecting. New scientific evidence has shown that the human brain is still maturing until age 21. If kids are drinking at such a young age, they are risking the chance of seriously damaging their short or long term growth of the brain. Drinking alcohol as a teen effects the brain differently than an adult brain because the teens brain is still developing. Drinking alcohol as a teen has the ability to stay in the body for up to two weeks after they have drunk. With that result, underage drinking has the ability to effect children's social skills, motor skills, good judgement; increases risk of mental illness, and highly increases the risk of becoming an alcoholic.

Recycling your Pizza Boxes

Have you ever enjoyed a nice hot fresh pizza and thrown the box in the trash without a second thought? It may surprise you to learn that only half the box can be recycled. When paper is recycled, it’s mixed with water to help create a pulp. Grease from the pizza gets added to the mixing process and the oil will form at the top of the mix, which will ruin the the mix.

Caring for your Ace Disposal Dumpster

Not many people realize what goes into preparing a dumpster before it is sent out to a business to be used. Bel ow are a few examples of the steps we take to ensure that our customers g et a good quality dumpster for their business. When a customer calls in because their dumpster is damaged, vandalized or odorous we bring that container into our facility and send our customers a nice refurbished dumpster. A lot of work goes into refurbishing a dumpster. The dumpster is thoroughly cleaned out in our state of the art wash bay. Damages are repaired and old, damaged decals are removed. We use a heated pressure steam cleaning system to help remove grease and odors. After a thorough cleaning, the container maintenance department does an inspection and will complete any final repairs necessary to meet company standards. The dumpster is then painted and ready for delivery. Our container department takes pride in the quality of the equipment they send out.

Apple is 75% Renewable

A huge congratulations to Apple facilities around the United States. They set a goal of making their facilities run completely off of renewable energy sources and it looks like they have met their goal!
A combination of geothermal, wind, and solar—like their 100-acre solar farm next to their Maiden, North Carolina data center, pictured below—provide all the juice these facilities need, obviating the need for coal. Their latest data center, currently under construction in Oregon, will reportedly add hydropower to the list.
What a great example to many other companies out there who are considering becoming renewable facilities.

Using Bales of Straw to Grow a Garden

Did you know that you can create a garden with a bale of straw? I would not believe it either had I not read the latest article in the New York Times about a man who is already doing this. Not only is he doing this in his spare time he wrote a book about it.
It was Mr. Karsten’s clever notion to condition the bale with a little fertilizer and water, creating a kind of instant compost pile. “The crust of the bale decomposes slowly,” he said. This is the vessel. The inside, which decays faster, “is our potting mix.” Stick a soaker hose on top, then plug some tomato seedlings into a hole gouged out of the straw. Time to wash the taint of barnyard off your hands: you’ve got a vegetable garden.

Considering Solar Panels on the Roof?

freedigitalphotos.net
Kudos to you if you have considered adding solar panels to your house. However, thinking about it and doing it are quite different things. Consider the following article from The Good Human which outlines many ideas to consider before outfitting your house with solar panels.

For example, do you rent or own your home?

How long do you plan on living in your home?

What kind of exposure to sunlight does your roof get?

Check out the answers and more here: http://thegoodhuman.com/2012/10/31/is-my-house-a-good-candidate-for-solar/

The Problem With Plastic Waste

It's no secret that figuring out what to do with plastic after it has been used is complicated. Unlike other recyclable material, plastic typically has a petroleum base which means it is non-renewable. However, plastic can be reused by breaking it down and to it's base level to be rebuilt into a new product. An example is the plastic found in automobiles.
All 40 kinds of plastics used in a North American automobile can be recycled, the need to separate and clean them makes using them more expensive than using virgin plastic resins. This translates into a higher proportion of plastics in the remnants of shredded end-of-life automobiles – a contaminated mixture of plastics and non-plastics that is usually disposed of through some combination of landfilling, incineration, and secondary recycling.

Trash to Fashion

We are always excited to hear about innovated new ways to recycle product. Recently, students at Eastern Kentucky University put together a fashion show using all recycled products. Students were first required to submit designs which were then chosen to be apart of the fashion show.

Among the predictable materials used to create sustainability-inspired designs were curtains, trash bags, newspapers and duct tape.

More bizarre materials used for clothing included Starbucks sleeves, orange construction fencing, an entire garment bag, Christmas tulle, shredded soda cans and cacti. Yes, one model walked the catwalk wearing three small cactuses as accessories.
That sounds like the kind of creative fun we can get behind!

Sinkhole Swallows a Garbage Truck

The news of the sinkhole in Florida that swallowed a man alive has us a little on edge. So it certainly didn't help to hear the story of a garbage truck in Oregon that was partially swallowed by another sinkhole. It happened in the parking lot of the local Sizzler in North Bend, Oregon.

The truck, which was partially swallowed by the sinkhole, had to be towed away. A storm line approximately 18 feet below the surface of the lot was crushed by the formation of the sinkhole, the report said. Crews have not yet located the end of the collapsed storm line.
Rather than walk around worried about being swallowed by sinkholes, we did a little digging into what they are and how they form.

It starts with the layer of rock such as limestone, carbonate rock or salt that is dissolved by ground water leaving pockets of air in it's place. The ground starts to sink into these pockets of air as the weight above get's heavier, eventually forming a sinkhole.

Some signs of sinkholes:

  • Cracks around doors, window frames, and in the foundation
  • Cracks in your foundation, walls, or swimming pool
  • Sagging fence posts, utility poles or trees, or loosening of the soil around them
  • Cracks that look like “stair steps” going up or down?
  • Doors, windows or cupboards that difficult to open
  • Growth of depressions in the ground on your property
  • Separation of walls from the floor or ceiling
  • "Dead patches" of grass or shrubs in your yard
So remember to be cautious...especially when parking your garbage truck!

Recycling Old Mattresses

Source: freedigitalphtos.net
It doesn't sound pleasant but Midwest Mattress Recovery LLC is taking the task of recycling mattresses seriously. There are over 17 million mattresses that are disposed of ever year!

This company is hoping customers will bring old mattresses to them. They will then disassemble all of the parts for recycling purposes.

Mudler says he has been working to get the word out on his company.
"Right now, I am really in the marketing stage and trying to turn interest into business," he said. The company initially will employ between seven and 10 people. "The interest around the state has been incredible."

New Option for Food Waste Disposal

freedigitalphotos.net
The landfill's have long lamented about the difficulty of managing food waste in the landfills. Food waste produces an incredible amount of methane emissions. However, due to the fact that there weren't a whole lot of options to be found on the market for food waste, this issue had remained unsolved .

That was until 2009 when the Peninsula Compost Company decided to start gathering food waste and instead of taking it to the landfills, they took it to their composting facilities. After a few weeks the food waste was converted into richly, nutritious soil to be used for public consumption.

Although there was a lot of uncertainty that this business model would work,  it was reported last week that the company has started to turn an operating profit. We think this is such a great way to great a sustainable ecosystem!

Fashion Industry Getting Into the Spirit of Recycling

Many industries are finding ways to save money by turning to recyclable and renewable resources. Surprisingly, the fashion industry is also making that leap. Puma has created a full line of "biodegradable clothing".

The collection, which includes shoes, clothing and accessories, only contains items able to be broken down in one of two processes. Materials in the "Biological Cycle" are organic, non-toxic fibers able to be broken down by microorganisms into biological nutrients that can go back into the Earth. Then there are items in the "Technical Cycle" - things like metal or plastic fastenings or special textiles would be harvested by the Bring Me Back program and then sent back to factories to be used in new items.

Time to Outlaw Styrofoam?

freedigitalphoto.net
If you are in New Yorker then chances are you have heard about the crusades of Mayor Michael Bloomberg against Styrofoam. He is eager to outlaw the use of all Styrofoam packaging in favor of more earth friendly packaging.

It doesn't seem like this would be a particularly hard fight, especially if you are like us and the thought of touching Styrofoam is like running fingernails down a chalkboard.

"Steve Russell, vice president of the American Chemistry Council, a trade group, said recycling polystyrene was something to look at instead of a ban.
"The technology exists to recycle polystyrene foam foodservice right now," he said, pointing to efforts in California."
We do have to agree that it  recycling might be a little less shocking to the economy than an outright ban. What do you think?

Senators Getting Serious about Nuclear Waste

All has been quiet on the nuclear waste home front after talks broke down surrounding the disposal of nuclear waste in Nevada's Yucca Mountains. However, it seems that some Senators are taking another look at re-approaching the issue.

Wyden is the new chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The radioactive waste working group also includes Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee. They’re all high-ranking members of both parties who hold key positions on committees that deal with energy issues.
They are looking to find a final short and long term storage solution  to dispose of nuclear waste.

Good luck. Our hats are off to these Senators. This necessary task will be difficult at best.
